Romanian Woman with harvest 'cununa'

Romanian costume, Coşbuc - Bistriţa-Năsăud, 1991
A wide brimmed straw hat (palarie de paie) is worn over a
floral printed headscarf. A 'cununa' made of straw is
resting on top of the hat

Wearing of the 'cununa' was (and in some places still is) a
part of the harvest traditions and the harvest festivals:
the 'cununa' brought fertility and happiness
to the young women and their families
